Our next MakeItGood x FatKidOnFire feature is with District. We sat down with him (over Skype) and had a chat about how it all started for him. If you haven’t heard of District already, then get to know! Check out his Facebook and YouTube channels, and have a read of the interview and see what you think!
1. How long have you been producing for?
I’ve been making beats properly for about a year now. I did a music technology course about 4/5 years ago but I was learning to record bands and I didn’t really know about producing or electronic music. The last year or so has been more serious in terms of trying the make music.
2. What software do you use at the moment to produce your tracks? What did you start out using?
I’ve always used Cubase. When I was at college that was the first piece of software they showed us. They also showed us Reason but I was never really feeling it, as you couldn’t record audio into it. I’ve stuck with Cubase since then, and I don’t think i’ve even got an up to date one!
3. What originally got you interested in producing?
I used to play in bands, and I just got sick of listening to the same music, so I was always trying to find different stuff to listen too. Early on I got listening to Aphex Twin, and then was really into Squarepusher because he played bass guitar, and thats really how I started listening to electronic music.
4. Turntables or CDJ’s?
I’d love to be able to DJ vinyl but now it’s a lot easier to use CDJ’s (I just went out and bought myself a pair!) Before I was just DJing from a laptop but I really didn’t like it. Programs like Ableton I’ve never really got into, and I think that’s because i came from a performing background and pushing buttons just didn’t do it for me!
5. Have you got any releases in the pipeline?
I’m sorting out some stuff at the moment, but it’s all going to be quiet until everything has been ironed out and I’m happy with the sounds that are coming out. I’m not really in a hurry to get tunes out there and am concentrating more on getting my sound right.
6. What are you listening to at the moment? Any recommendations?
I’m trying not to listen to too much dubstep, but I’m really feeling the Kryptic Minds album and have had that on non stop! I still listen to quite a bit of Drum and Bass, especially DLR. Other than that, I also listen to some old metal, such as Converge!
7. Best set and why?
DJ wise, I’ve only done a couple of gigs, so I think it would be hard to say where the best one was! GetDarker however was definitely a highlight though! I think if I did it again I would enjoy it a bit more, not as many nerves!
8. Do you have any advice to upcoming DJ’s/Producers?
The thing that have helped me is that if your working on tunes, try not to get too excited about someone saying “can you send this over” or “we want to sign this to our new label”. You should be happy with your production and sounds before you do anything, and it should be up to your standard.
District featured on GetDarker a few weeks back alongside Sleeper, Raggs (MakeItGood writer) and Lost & Shiverz. Check out the YouTube video below of his set! It is also available as a podcast here. A massive BIG UP to District for doing this interview, and hopefully we’ll be hearing a lot more from him in the near future!
