The Daily Street 013: Vandera

To celebrate a year of mixtapes, and blimey it’s been a good year, The Daily Street once again comes correct with this absolute masterpiece of mix from London based dubstep DJ, Vandera. I use the term mix loosely however, as it’s about as far away from the traditional two 1210s and bag of records as you can get. This is how it works, 60 minutes, 60 tracks, 1 key: C-Minor. The result is a seamless blend of tunes, so perfectly mixed that at times it’s almost impossible to distinguish which track is which - it just feels like one big remix, and that’s what makes it so impressive. Vandera really has put together something special here, so sit back, relax and engulf yourself in the this brilliant piece of music.

What approach have you taken for this mix?
“The intention was to create a seamless, deep dreamy mix, blurring the boundaries between producing and DJ-ing. Just like many electronic producers sample from old records, I used bass lines, vocals, and beats from recent tracks and tried to create one big re-mix. Some tracks are just 20 second samples equalised heavily to emphasise a particular instrument, while others can play for 7 minutes and carry several other tracks. During the entire mix there are at least two tracks playing at the same time, up to 6 tracks at some points. The track list order was a challenge to write, good luck time stamping that in mixcloud haha. The main feature of this mix is that it’s entirely in C minor. You could load up two copies of the mix and blend everything again at any point in the mix. The work title for the project was ‘Opus 1 in C minor’. I might do an Opus 2 in E minor in the future if I can find enough melodies in that key.”

Which track or mix is your personal favourite?
“It’s hard to choose from 60 tracks, though if I must highlight a few faves I’d say the combination of Lung with Kastle (42:15), Phaeleh’s dubby bassline with Jazzy Jazzy and Swarms (8:30), Salmonella Dub’s trumpets with Splinter in my Soul (17:00), Blu Mar Ten’s vocals with Merce (24:48), or Coleco’s mystical flute with Submotion Orchestra (48:14). Also, Oceania’s tracks have big beats and great open space to layer other melodies over. It’s all about creating a new coherent sound with all the good music that’s out there, creating order from chaos. I think some DJ’s don’t focus enough on the sound of their mix, just on the track list.”

What did you do the mix on?
“I left the turntables off this time, and instead used a tweaked PC with a good time stretching algorithm, a laptop to edit the waves when I was on the move, and Audition to mix it all down.”

Is style important to you?
“Yeah style does influence my mood and self-perception now that I think of it. Gotta switch between the day job’s nerdy corporate look and the opposite for gigs, so my wardrobe is massive.”

What brand(s) are you particularly feeling at the moment?
“Bought a few good Tees from SeventySeven recently, and besides fashion I’m a sucker for Italian motorbikes. I love my Ducati most of all things materialistic.”

The Daily Street 012: Randomer

The Daily Street’s latest mixtape comes from bass music don, Randomer. Cutting his production gums with dubstep and drum and bass, the London based producer has dipped into more house-influenced territories of late, as his mix demonstrates. With releases on Med School, Super and Soul Jazz, and forthcoming material set for release on the much-acclaimed Hessle Audio label, it’s no surprise that Randomer’s music is causing a stir in the bass music scene.

The mix showcases a selection of rugged, percussive house, underpinned throughout by a mass of heavy, stomping bass. Packed with exclusives from Ramadanman, Raffertie, Blawan and Randomer himself, it’s guaranteed to get you moving. Enjoy, it won’t disappoint.

What approach have you taken for this mix?
“This mix is a combination of the sort of set I’m playing live at the moment, as well as a few exclusives and forthcomings of my own work and friends of mine.”

Which track or mix is your personal favourite?
“Probably the mix between “Stalker” and “Obtuse VIP”. On the one hand you have quite a simplistic stomping track and on the other some sort of odd crazyness. It shouldn’t work but it does, and probably ends up being the most intense point in the mix.”

What did you do the mix on?
“Ableton.”

Is style important to you?
“That’s a quite a vague question. Musical style probably matters more to me slightly more than fashion, but I think anyone who has strong aesthetic values in one form will end up with their own style across different art-forms.”

What brand(s) are you particularly feeling at the moment?
“Sainsbury’s Basics, Guinness, Snickers Ice cream…”

Tracklist:

The Daily Street 011: Koreless

This month’s The Daily Street mixtape comes from Glaswegian talent Koreless. Hotly tipped for 2011, the youngster is carving out his own melodic take on what we’ve come to know as UK bass music. With support from Gilles Peterson, a handful of high quality releases and a booking at this year’s OutlookFestival, we’re sure it won’t be long before Koreless is making huge waves in the bass music scene and beyond.

Not your average mixtape, Koreless demonstrates his musical versatility with a selection of soulful jazz cuts ranging from the early 70’s right up until the present day. So sit back, relax, and enjoy this smooth yet rhythmic 40 minutes of unmistakably good music.

What approach have you taken for this mix?”
“Its just a collection of old and new jazz (ish) that I’ve been into lately.”

Which track or mix is your personal favourite?

“Favorite track would be Tribe – ‘What We need’. Although if i could have got hold of the ‘Roy Brookes’ verson of ‘Eboness’ it would have been that hands down…”

What brand(s) are you particularly feeling at the moment?
“Really like the Trapstar tee’s and all of the SHhhh ones.”

The Daily Street 010: Lung

For mixtape 010 The Daily Street invited hotly tipped newcomer and one of Cardiff’s finest, Lung, to take to the spotlight.

For this mixtape, he’s gone for the 170 bpm region and brought a thought provoking and captivating tune selection to the table. Speckled with dubs from close friends and label colleagues, it’s a real pleasure to listen to and makes a very welcome addition to the series. They fired a few questions to the man himself about the mix and his views on fashion …

What approach have you taken for this mix?
“Basically just to try and showcase what music I’m currently feeling right now, the kind of stuff I’ll be producing, and the kind of stuff people can expect to hear when they come and see me play.”

Which track or mix is your personal favourite?
“My favourite track in the mix is probably ‘Rekohu Sunrise’ by Rockwell and Untold – but my favourite mix is probably ‘Aerosoul’ into the Boycom remix from Eleven8 and then into ‘Say Hello, Wave Goodbye’ by Nu:Tone.”

What did you do the mix on?
“I recorded the mix on some entry level pioneer CDJs – nothing fancy, but they do the job!”

Is style important to you?
“I guess so, I’m probably quite lazy (too skint) when it comes down to it, so you’ll probably find me in a hoodie and jeans most days. I do like a nice shirt though. Haha. I’ve always said if I could get away with wearing a suit every day I would. Something tailor made.”

What brand(s) are you particularly feeling at the moment?
“Droneboy Laundry – just seen the new tees for the line and they look sweet as usual!! Will always love Adidas though, had a pair of Superstar II’s which I wore for years – pretty bland I know, but I loved them. Just plain White with the black stripes. Wore them for ages, got too drunk one time and puked on them (fully intended on keeping them – still!) unfortunately my mum threw them out behind my back. GUTTING.”

The Daily Street 009: Raffertie

Avid listeners of Huw Stephens show on BBC Radio1 will undoubtedly already be familiar with Raffertie’s work, as he seems to push every piece of music that Raffertie touches (and deservedly so) along with the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs and Rob da Bank. With a very distinctive and original sound, it’s no surprise that he’s making quite a name for himself with releases and remixes on labels such as Planet Mu, Big Dada, Special Branch, Black Acre and of course his own label Super.

For his mixtape, Ben (Raffertie) takes us on a journey through House and Bass Music, via UK Garage and drawing on some heavily southern Hip-Hop influenced sounds, showcasing his diverse musical tastes. From start to finish it’s a real experience to listen to and is mixed with some high-end skill, blending smoothly from tune to tune and controlling your emotions over 50 minutes.

The Daily Street - Mixtape 008: Hackman

The second Daily Street mixtape feature coming to you sees Leeds based producer Hackman bring a strong 50 minutes of House vibes and a more than decent selection of unreleased gems (almost the entire mix)!

Hackman is best known for his work in the realms of UK Funky, having key releases on labels such as PTN, Shifting Peaks and Well Rounded. To anyone that is well read on the UK Funky and Bass Music scene that is taking over the UK at the moment, these labels should be ringing big alarm bells in your head. However, as time moves on we all move with it and it seems that Hackman has left the UK Funky movement to head into the world of House, and when listening to this mix I don’t feel that this is in any way a bad thing. It all seems to be being chucked under the large umbrella genre that is “Bass Music” these days anyway. 50 minutes of incredible music, a large chunk of which was made by the man himself, with near flawless mixing ability, mixtape 008 sits beautifully alongside our more recent mixes whilst still holding it’s own as an individual.

The Daily Street - Mixtape 007: Blawan

We’re so stoked to be adding The Daily Street mixtape feature to makeitgood. If you guys haven’t checked out there site, your missing out. It brings you the latest news in streetware, art, music and everything cool. The newest mix by Blawan brings you 50 minutes of House, Techno, Dubstep and everything in between.

With his debut release on infamous label Hessle Audio and being featured on Dubstep Allstars: Vol.07, it’s fair to say that Blawan has made moves in the dance scene and is set to go on to big things. An honest chap from Barnsley in South Yorkshire, you would be excused for never linking him to his tunes and success if you get the pleasure of meeting him. When talking to Sonic Router about how he got his debut release ‘Fram’ on Hessle Audio he said “I had a few tunes that had been sitting around and one day, I just said ‘Fuck it. I’ll send these to Untold.’ I did that, then within about 2 hours I got a phone call off David (Ramadanman) saying Jack (Untold) sent him the tunes and the guys liked them and want to put something out. A simple but crazy outcome and I can’t tell you how lucky I feel to be in the Hessle camp.” … nice and simple! If that doesn’t give you some idea of this guys talent then I don’t know what will.

With forthcoming releases coming up on some serious labels (I’ve been sworn to secrecy) and a couple of remixes also, expect to get very used to the name Blawan.

Download and tracklist below. big love to you all.
